Draft — not published
This ranking is blocked on the execution quality pillar, which is unscored in the current methodology. Execution quality is unscored in v1.0. Assessing it means reading each firm's SEC Rule 605 execution-quality statistics and Rule 606 order-routing disclosures across a full quarter, and platform capability means using the software under live conditions. We have done neither.
The page is excluded from search engines and carries no ranking table. We publish it because the reasoning is worth reading even when the answer is not ready.
Quick verdict
We are not publishing this ranking. For an active trader, the two variables that dominate are execution quality and platform capability under load — and those are precisely the two we have no evidence for. A day-trading ranking built only on published commissions would rank on the least important input and present it as the answer.
What we can already say about costs
Commission structures for active traders differ more than the retail headline suggests. TradeStation prices options and futures per side on volume tiers, so a round trip costs twice the quoted rate. Interactive Brokers' tiered plan falls to $0.0005 per share at the top volume band but carries a $0.35 order minimum. tastytrade caps equity options at $10 per leg and charges nothing to close.
Those are real differences and they are in our comparison tool. What they are not is a ranking of who fills your orders better, and for an active trader that gap is the whole question.
The pattern day trader rule applies regardless of broker
FINRA's pattern day trader rule requires a minimum of $25,000 in equity in a margin account for anyone executing four or more day trades within five business days, where those trades exceed 6% of total trading activity. No broker can waive it. Any page suggesting one broker gets you around it is wrong.
How we evaluated
- Safety and regulation30%
- Evidence: FINRA BrokerCheck entity record — legal name, CRD number, SEC file number and registration status — SIPC membership, and public enforcement actions from the regulator or SRO that brought them.
- Fees and total cost30%
- Evidence: The firm's own published commission and fee schedule, read in full.
- Investment selection22%
- Evidence: The asset classes named on the firm's own published pricing or product pages.
- Account types and features18%
- Evidence: The account types named in the firm's own published account lineup.
Five further pillars — access and eligibility, platform and usability, research and education, customer service, execution quality — carry no weight in any ranking, because none of them can yet be settled from a document a reader can open. What each would require is set out in the methodology.
Researched but excluded
- SoFi Invest (SOFI SECURITIES LLC, CRD 151717) — Legal entity confirmed via FINRA, but the fee page returned HTTP 403 when we attempted to read it. Re-attempted on 30 August 2026 against the published fee schedule PDF and the SoFi support articles: both returned 403 as well. Secondary summaries of SoFiâs pricing are available and we are not using them â we will not score a firm from anything but its own document.
Frequently asked questions
- Why will you not rank day trading brokers?
- Because we would be ranking on commissions while calling it a ranking on trading quality. Until we have read Rule 605 and 606 disclosures across a full quarter and used the platforms under live conditions, we do not have the evidence the question requires.
