Quick verdict

For an account you will operate entirely online, cost and safety dominate and account-type breadth matters less. Under that weighting Interactive Brokers, Fidelity and Charles Schwab still lead, but Robinhood and Webull close the gap sharply — both publish genuinely zero-cost equity and options schedules. The question that separates them is what happens when you want to leave: Webull charges $75 to transfer out, Fidelity charges nothing.

Positions are computed from published sub-scores at build time. Interactive Brokers, Fidelity, Charles Schwab lead; their unrounded totals are 9.09, 8.91, 8.65.

Why these weights

Cost is raised to 35% and account types cut to 13%, on the reasoning that a reader searching for an online broker is optimising the running cost of a self-directed account rather than assembling a full household financial structure.

Winners by category

  • Cheapest published equity schedule

    Webull

$0 on US-listed stocks, ETFs and standard options contracts, with regulatory fees itemised in full.

  • Cheapest at scale

    Interactive Brokers

IBKR Pro tiered pricing falls to $0.0005 per share at the top volume band, capped at 1% of trade value.

  • Cheapest to leave

    Fidelity

$0 to transfer assets, against $75 at Webull and $49.95 at Merrill Edge.

The fees that actually differ

Commission-free stock trading is now the industry default in the United States, so it carries almost no information. What still differs, and what we scored, is everything around it: the per-contract options fee, which ranges from $0.04 to $1.00 across this table; the exit fee, which ranges from $0 to $100; inactivity charges; broker-assisted charges; and the transaction fees on non-proprietary mutual funds.

For a buy-and-hold investor placing a handful of trades a year, the exit fee and the account service fee will dominate lifetime cost. For an options trader, the per-contract fee will. Those two readers should not use the same ranking, which is why the sub-scores are published separately.

Reading a zero-commission schedule properly

Every broker here passes through regulatory fees on sales: an SEC transaction fee and a FINRA trading activity fee. These are small and largely identical across firms, and no broker absorbs them. They are not a differentiator, and we did not score them.

What is a differentiator is which trades fall outside the zero-commission headline. Schwab prices OTC equities at $6.95. Interactive Brokers moves OTC stocks, warrants, delisted ETPs, overnight-hours trades and recurring investments off IBKR Lite and onto Fixed pricing. Webull charges $0.50 per contract on certain index options and $0.10 on oversized option orders. Robinhood charges $0.50 per index options contract unless you subscribe to Gold.

Why each broker sits where it does

The figures that matter for best online brokers, and the arithmetic that produced each position under this page’s weights. The same brokers rank differently elsewhere on this site because a different question is being asked; the sub-scores do not change, the weights do.

IBKR Lite $0; IBKR Pro from $0.0035/share (tiered) or $0.005/share (fixed)

On fees and total cost: IBKR Lite is $0 on US listed equities for US residents. IBKR Pro tiered starts at $0.0035 per share with a $0.35 order minimum and a 1% of trade value cap, which is the cheapest published schedule in our set for large orders. Small Pro orders hit the per-order minimum, so it is not universally cheapest.

On fees and total cost: $0 stock and ETF commissions with no per-contract options fee for US users, and $0 withdrawal fees. The full brokerage fee schedule, read on 31 August 2026, shows the costs the headline does not: $75 to transfer the account out, $10 a month in inactivity fees, and a 0.25% FX spread on non-USD wires. With crypto at a flat 1% as well, that is a wider fee surface than the zero-commission framing suggests.

Every sub-score and why

The arithmetic behind every position on this page: each sub-score, the weight it carries here, and what it contributes to the total. If you disagree with a weight, these let you recompute the ranking yourself — that is the point of publishing them. The written reason behind each integer is on that broker’s review.

Five further pillars — access and eligibility, platform and usability, research and education, customer service, execution quality — carry no weight in any ranking, because none of them can yet be settled from a document a reader can open. What each would require is set out in the methodology.

Researched but excluded

  • SoFi Invest (SOFI SECURITIES LLC, CRD 151717) — Legal entity confirmed via FINRA, but the fee page returned HTTP 403 when we attempted to read it. Re-attempted on 30 August 2026 against the published fee schedule PDF and the SoFi support articles: both returned 403 as well. Secondary summaries of SoFi’s pricing are available and we are not using them — we will not score a firm from anything but its own document.

Frequently asked questions

Are online brokers actually free?
The stock trade usually is. The account rarely is. Across the eleven brokers we scored, published charges still include a $25 annual account service fee, a $75 outgoing transfer fee, a $10 monthly inactivity fee, $6.95 OTC equity commissions and per-contract options fees up to $1.00. Which of those you pay depends entirely on how you use the account.
What is the difference between an online broker and a trading platform?
The broker is the regulated legal entity that holds your assets and executes your orders — the one with a CRD number and SIPC membership. The platform is the software you place orders through. Some firms build both; some license a platform from elsewhere. Your money's safety depends on the broker, not the platform.
How often do you re-check these fees?
The verification date on this page is the date we last read every schedule end to end. Our corrections policy commits us to re-reading the full dataset at least quarterly, and to re-reading any individual firm's schedule within five business days of a credible report that it has changed.
