Quick verdict
Over a thirty-year holding period, the per-trade commission is close to irrelevant and the structural costs are not. What matters is whether the firm offers the account wrappers you will need, whether it charges you to hold or to leave, and whether it gives you access to low-cost funds. Fidelity leads on all four counts. Charles Schwab and Vanguard follow, with Vanguard held back by the only annual account fee in our set.

Positions are computed from published sub-scores at build time. Fidelity, Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab lead; their unrounded totals are 9.16, 8.84, 8.76.
Why these weights
Account types is weighted heaviest of any ranking here, at 30%, because a long-term investor needs specific wrappers — IRAs, custodial, trust, solo 401(k), HSA — and switching firms later is the expensive outcome this ranking exists to avoid.
Winners by category
Widest wrapper coverage
FidelityThe only firm here publishing HSA and solo 401(k) alongside the full IRA lineup.
Deepest fund range at zero transaction cost
Charles Schwab$0 on thousands of Mutual Fund OneSource funds, plus $0 on new-issue bonds online.
Holding costs matter more than trading costs here
If you buy twice a year and sell nothing, a $0.65 options contract fee will never touch you. A $25 annual account service fee will, every year, compounding against you. Vanguard's fee is waivable with electronic statement delivery, which most readers should simply do — but it is the only recurring account charge in our published set, and it is the reason Vanguard's cost score sits at 7 rather than 9 despite its low fund expenses.
The second structural cost is the exit fee. A long-term investor is exactly the person who will eventually consolidate accounts, inherit one, or move to a firm that offers a wrapper their current broker does not. Fidelity publishes $0 for transfers. Merrill Edge publishes $49.95 for a full transfer out, Webull $75, and Vanguard $100 to close the account and move the assets.
The wrappers that quietly rule brokers out
A solo 401(k) matters if you have self-employment income, and it allows far higher contributions than an IRA. Fidelity and Vanguard publish one; most of the rest do not. An HSA, where you are eligible for one, is the only account with three-way tax advantages; Fidelity is the only firm in our set publishing one alongside brokerage accounts.
Custodial accounts matter if you are investing for a child. Fidelity, Schwab, E*TRADE, Vanguard and Merrill Edge all publish them. Robinhood, Webull, tastytrade, TradeStation and eToro US do not, on the pages we read.
None of this is a reason to avoid the app-first firms for a taxable account. It is a reason not to assume the account you open at 25 is the one you will still be using at 45.
Every sub-score and why
Each integer below has a written reason. If you disagree with a weight, the sub-scores let you recompute the ranking yourself — that is the point of publishing them.

- IBKR Lite is $0 on US listed equities for US residents. IBKR Pro tiered starts at $0.0035 per share with a $0.35 order minimum and a 1% of trade value cap, which is the cheapest published schedule in our set for large orders. Small Pro orders hit the per-order minimum, so it is not universally cheapest.

- Fees and total cost8/10 × 24% = 1.9
- $0 listed equity and ETF commissions, $0.65 per options contract, $0 account minimum and $0 opening and maintenance fees. Marked down from 9 on 30 August 2026 after we read the April 2026 pricing guide, which adds three costs the headline schedule does not show: a $6.95 OTC equity commission, $50 to transfer a full account out, and a currency conversion markup of up to 3% of principal. Fidelity charges none of the three.
- Investment selection9/10 × 14% = 1.3
- Stocks, ETFs, options, bonds, mutual funds, fractional shares, a dedicated global account for international equities, and futures at $2.25 per contract confirmed from the April 2026 pricing guide. Below Interactive Brokers only on spot currencies and crypto.

- Safety and regulation8/10 × 32% = 2.6
- Accounts sit with an active SEC-registered Morgan Stanley broker-dealer (8-68191) that is a SIPC member. Marked one point below the long-single-entity firms because BrokerCheck lists the original E*TRADE Securities LLC registration as inactive, so clients have been through an entity migration.
- Fees and total cost8/10 × 24% = 1.9
- $0 on stocks, ETFs and mutual funds with a $0.65 options contract fee that falls to $0.50 at 30 trades per quarter. Futures at $1.50 per contract are the most expensive futures rate we recorded, and crypto at 0.50% is mid-pack.

- Safety and regulation9/10 × 32% = 2.9
- Active SEC-registered broker-dealer (8-21570) with a low CRD number indicating long registration history, and a SIPC member. No headline retail enforcement matter identified in our sourced review.
- Fees and total cost6/10 × 24% = 1.4
- $0 online stock and ETF trades and $0 on Vanguard and no-transaction-fee funds. Marked down twice: it carries the highest options contract fee in our set at $1.00, a $25 annual account service fee unless waived, $20 per trade on non-Vanguard transaction-fee funds, and — read on 30 August 2026 — a $100 processing fee to close the account and transfer assets out, the largest exit charge of any broker we publish. A low-cost fund house is not automatically a low-cost brokerage account.
- Investment selection6/10 × 14% = 0.8

- Fees and total cost8/10 × 24% = 1.9
- Free equity trades and a $10 per leg cap that makes large multi-leg options orders unusually cheap, with nothing charged to close a position. Scored below the flat-zero firms because a single equity option contract costs $1 to open, against $0.04 at the cheapest firm in our set, and — read on 30 August 2026 — closing the account costs $75 on the way out.

- Active SEC-registered broker-dealer (8-66049), FINRA member and SIPC member, with no enforcement matter identified in our sourced review. Its CRD number, 127818, is lower than those of Robinhood, Webull, tastytrade and eToro, which means the legal entity has been registered longer than the appâs launch date suggests. Still well short of the multi-decade registration records that earn a 9 here.
- Fees and total cost8/10 × 24% = 1.9
- $0 on US-listed stocks and ETFs in regular hours, $0 per stock and ETF options contract, and margin from 4.90% falling to 3.95% â the cheapest margin schedule we recorded, undercutting the next firm by more than six percentage points at the entry tier. Held to an 8 by three charges the headline pricing does not show: $2.99 per extended-hours or OTC trade without Premium, $100 to transfer the account out, and a 0.30% fee on currency conversion.
- Investment selection6/10 × 14% = 0.8
- Stocks, ETFs, equity and index options, OTC stocks, Treasuries, corporate bonds and crypto are all priced on the published schedule, and the bond range is deeper than most of the set. No mutual funds and no futures, which is the same double gap that holds the other app-first brokers at this level. Fractional shares are advertised but were not confirmed from a fee schedule or pricing table.
- Account types and features5/10 × 30% = 1.5
- Taxable, traditional IRA, Roth IRA, a crypto IRA and margin. No joint, custodial, SEP, solo 401(k) or HSA accounts identified; trust accounts are listed as not yet available. That rules the firm out for a large share of household situations.

- Active SEC-registered broker-dealer (8-69188) and SIPC member, so custody protection is equivalent to the rest of the set. Scored well below its peers because of two settled 2025 enforcement matters totalling roughly $75 million, one of which involved disclosure to customers about how their orders were handled.
- Fees and total cost8/10 × 24% = 1.9
- $0 commissions on stocks and ETFs and $0.04 per equity options contract — the lowest per-contract fee we recorded — alongside the lowest margin rates in our set, from 5.00% down to 3.95%. Marked down from 9 on 30 August 2026 after we read the standard fee schedule, which charges $100 to move an account out, on partial transfers as well as full ones. - Platform and usability — Hands-on use of a funded account on desktop, web and mobile.
- Research and education — Logged-in access to each firm's research suite and education library.
- Customer service — Timed contact tests across phone, chat and email, repeated over several weeks.
- Execution quality — Analysis of SEC Rule 605 and Rule 606 order-execution and routing disclosures across a full quarter.
Researched but excluded
- SoFi Invest (SOFI SECURITIES LLC, CRD 151717) — Legal entity confirmed via FINRA, but the fee page returned HTTP 403 when we attempted to read it. Re-attempted on 30 August 2026 against the published fee schedule PDF and the SoFi support articles: both returned 403 as well. Secondary summaries of SoFiâs pricing are available and we are not using them â we will not score a firm from anything but its own document.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the broker I choose affect my long-term returns?
- At the margin, and mostly through costs you keep paying rather than costs you pay once. Recurring account fees, fund transaction fees and expense ratios compound; a one-off commission does not. Nothing on this page is a prediction of returns, and no broker choice makes an investment safe.
- Should I consolidate my accounts at one broker?
- There are real arguments both ways — simpler administration and possible fee-tier benefits on one side, and SIPC coverage applying per firm on the other. It depends on your balances and your situation, and it is a question for a licensed adviser rather than for a comparison site.
