Quick verdict

For a first account, three published facts matter more than anything else: you can start with any amount, you will not be charged for holding the account, and you can leave without a penalty. Fidelity and Charles Schwab satisfy all three. Interactive Brokers does too, though its two-tier pricing asks more of a beginner than a flat $0 schedule does. Read this ranking knowing what it does not cover: it scores what the documents show, and app quality — which matters enormously to a first-time investor — is not among them.

Positions are computed from published sub-scores at build time. Fidelity, Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab lead; their unrounded totals are 9.15, 8.85, 8.65.

Why these weights

Cost is weighted heaviest because a small starting balance is where fixed charges do the most damage, and account types is raised because a beginner's first real decision is usually taxable versus IRA. Selection is cut to 10%: a beginner does not need futures.

Winners by category

  • Lowest barrier to starting

    Fidelity

No account minimum, no published account service or inactivity fee, and $0 to transfer assets in.

  • Simplest fee schedule to read

    Charles Schwab

$0 listed equity commissions, $0 account minimum and $0 opening and maintenance fees, with the exceptions stated on one page.

What this ranking deliberately does not tell you

Most beginner broker rankings are, in substance, app reviews. Ours is not, because we have not used these apps with real money. If the deciding factor for you is whether an interface makes sense the first time you open it, this page cannot answer that, and you should treat it as one input rather than the answer.

What we can tell you is which firms will let you start with $25, which will charge you for going quiet, which will charge you to leave, and which will let you open the retirement account you will probably want within a year. Those are published facts, they are the ones beginners most often discover too late, and they are in the table.

The three fees that hurt small accounts most

An account service fee is a fixed charge, so it hurts in inverse proportion to your balance. Vanguard's $25 annual fee is 2.5% of a $1,000 account and 0.025% of a $100,000 one. It is waived with electronic delivery of statements, which is a two-minute setting — but only if you know to change it.

An inactivity fee punishes exactly the behaviour a long-term beginner should have. TradeStation publishes $10 a month unless the account meets minimum activity. For someone investing monthly and otherwise leaving the account alone, that is a structural mismatch.

An outgoing transfer fee is the cost of discovering you chose wrong. Vanguard charges $100 to close and transfer out, Webull $75, Merrill Edge $49.95 for a full transfer. Fidelity charges $0. For a first account — the one you are most likely to want to move — this is worth more weight than most beginner guides give it.

Retirement accounts are the first real fork in the road

Robinhood, Webull and eToro US all publish narrow account lineups. eToro US offers individual taxable accounts only, which means no IRA at all. Robinhood and Webull offer IRAs but no joint, custodial or trust accounts.

That is not a problem on day one. It becomes one when you want to open a Roth IRA, hold an account jointly with a partner, or open a custodial account for a child, and have to start a relationship with a second firm to do it. Fidelity, Schwab, E*TRADE, Vanguard and Merrill Edge all publish full lineups.

Why each broker sits where it does

The figures that matter for beginners, and the arithmetic that produced each position under this page’s weights. The same brokers rank differently elsewhere on this site because a different question is being asked; the sub-scores do not change, the weights do.

With crypto at a flat 1% as well, that is a wider fee surface than the zero-commission framing suggests.

Every sub-score and why

The arithmetic behind every position on this page: each sub-score, the weight it carries here, and what it contributes to the total. If you disagree with a weight, these let you recompute the ranking yourself — that is the point of publishing them. The written reason behind each integer is on that broker’s review.

Five further pillars — access and eligibility, platform and usability, research and education, customer service, execution quality — carry no weight in any ranking, because none of them can yet be settled from a document a reader can open. What each would require is set out in the methodology.

Researched but excluded

  • SoFi Invest (SOFI SECURITIES LLC, CRD 151717) — Legal entity confirmed via FINRA, but the fee page returned HTTP 403 when we attempted to read it. Re-attempted on 30 August 2026 against the published fee schedule PDF and the SoFi support articles: both returned 403 as well. Secondary summaries of SoFi’s pricing are available and we are not using them — we will not score a firm from anything but its own document.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to start investing?
At most brokers in this table, nothing. Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Interactive Brokers, Robinhood, Webull and Merrill Edge all publish a $0 account minimum. What actually limits a small start is whether the broker offers fractional shares, since without them you cannot buy into a stock priced above your contribution.
Should my first account be a taxable account or an IRA?
That depends on your tax situation, your time horizon and whether you may need the money before retirement, and it is a question for a licensed adviser or a tax professional rather than for us. What we can tell you is which brokers offer both, so the decision is not made for you by your choice of platform.
Is a broker with a simpler app a better first broker?
Possibly, and this ranking does not answer it. Be wary of any ranking that scores app quality without describing how it was measured — ask what was tested, on what accounts, and when. A score with no method behind it is a preference wearing a number.
